Introduction Evidence-based medicine (EBM) is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients . The practice of evidence-based medicine means integrating individual clinical practice with the best available external clinical evidence systematic research. We should not make decisions based on our clinical experience alone because our experiences may be biased. The essential steps include: To convert our information needs into answerable questions (i.e. to formulate the problem ); To track down, with maximum efficiency , the best evidence with which to answer these questions - which may come from the clinical examination, the diagnostic laboratory, the published literature or other sources; To appraise the evidence critically to assess its validity and usefulness; To implement the results of this appraisal in our clinical practice; To evaluate our performance NOTE: EBM does not mean we justify our app...

Critical Appraisal in Aetiology Research

Introduction In clinical practice, decision making is often influenced by Experience Consensus among expertise Evidence-based medicine (EBM) - the preferred approach Evidence-based medicine integrates the best available research evidence with clinical expertise and the unique values and circumstances of the patient to optimize patient care. Current Predicament Ideally, clinical practice should be informed by the latest medical research. However, the rapid pace of scientific discovery often outstrips the publication cycle of textbooks, which can be outdated within a few years. Furthermore, not all published research is accurate or reliable. Academic pressure to publish (publish or perish) can compromise research integrity. The quality of journals varies significantly, and even reputable publishers may retract flawed studies. Consequently, clinicians must critically appraise research to evaluate its reliability, validity, and applicability to their patients, rather than accepting conclu...
