Video Codecs

Introduction A video codec (coder-decoder) is a technology that compresses and decompresses digital video data. Uncompressed digital video files are extremely large, making them impractical for storage and transmission. Codecs address this issue by reducing file sizes, enabling efficient storage and streaming while striving to maintain acceptable video quality. It is important to understand that compression is a trade-off: Greater compression generally means smaller file sizes but can potentially lead to some loss of quality, although modern codecs are very good at minimizing this. Types of Video Codecs Several video codecs exist, each with its own strengths and weaknesses, optimized for different use cases. Here are some of the most prominent. H.264 (Advanced Video Coding, AVC) Despite being an older codec, H.264 remains widely supported due to its balance of compression efficiency and quality as well as compatibility with a vast range of devices. However, newer codecs offer better pe...

Viewing HEIF Images on Windows

Image
Introduction HEIF is a newer image format that offers better compression than JPEG while maintaining high quality. It is becoming increasingly popular, especially on Apple devices. However, when you want to view these images on a Windows Computer, you may run into some compatibility issues. Install the HEIF and HEVC Extensions from Microsoft Store The HEIF Image Extension (Free) enables Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices to read and write files that use the High Efficiency Image File (HEIF) format. Such files can have a .heic or .heif file extension. However, some HEIF images are compressed using the HEVC format, which requires the HEVC Video Extensions package (USD 0.99 - optional) to be installed as well. Once installed, you will be able to view HEIC files in the Photos app like any other image format, and File Explorer will generate thumbnails for your HEIC image files. Alternative: Use a Third-Party Software If you do not want to pay the USD 0.99 for the HEVC Video Extensions, yo...
