Salt

Introduction A customer walked into your community pharmacy and would like to buy some iodized salt. Types of Salts Essentially, salt is sodium chloride (NaCl). Sea salt is a general term for salt produced by evaporation of ocean water or water from saltwater lakes. It retains trace minerals which add flavour and colour. Celtic salt is a type of sea salt harvested from coastlines after seawater evaporates. Originally sourced from the Celtic Seas near northwestern France, it is now produced in other coastal regions as well. Its characteristic grey colour originates from the inclusion of extra minerals such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc, and iron. Rock salt , also known as halite, is the salt from the ocean that has already formed a rock. Similar to sea salt, it contains very small amounts of minerals such as zinc, copper, iron, manganese, potassium, calcium and copper. Himalayan salt, is rock salt primarily mined from the Salt Range mountains in the Punjab region of Pakistan...

Levothyroxine

Image
Introduction Levothyroxine is classified as a narrow therapeutic index drug. Therapeutic drug monitoring based on serum Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and total or free-levothyroxine levels is routinely employed to facilitate levothyroxine dose titration. The goal is to achieve a satisfactory balance between maximizing efficacy and minimizing serious dose-related toxicity. Over-replacement and under-replacement of thyroid hormone can increase cardiovascular risk. To ensure safe maintenance of thyroid hormone levels, authorities are adopting stricter potency specifications for L-T4, the most stringent of these being 95-105% of the labelled dose over the whole shelf-life. Dosing in Hypothyroidism The dosage of levothyroxine is individualized based on clinical response and serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and/or free T4 concentrations. Individual T4 requirements correlate better with lean body weight than total body weight. Adjust the levothyroxine dose at 4- to 8-weekly inter...
