Active Engagement and Lifelong Learning Learning is often a fleeting opportunity. I encourage you to absorb as much as possible during your student attachments and your time as a Provisional Registered Pharmacist (PRP) . Once you are practicing independently in a community pharmacy or government clinic, you must make clinical decisions on your own. As you grow in seniority, expectations rise. You will no longer have a senior pharmacist to "baby-step" you through tasks or constantly flood you with clinical insights. Therefore, seize every opportunity to learn now. My mother echoed this sentiment, believing education would empower my siblings and me to explore the unknown world beyond our hometown. My parents’ struggle with reading has limited their ability to travel independently. Formal Education Formal education, though sometimes criticized for its emphasis on theory, equips us with the foundation to acces...

Learning in Outpatient Pharmacy

Introduction A few years ago, a senior pharmacist described outpatient pharmacy as a "dark hole" where most newly registered pharmacists are placed. However, it can be a valuable place to build a foundation in pharmacy practice . In outpatient pharmacy , we receive prescriptions from various clinics within the hospital, including general medical, surgical, ophthalmology, dermatology, rheumatology, paediatrics, neurology, nephrology and more. To properly screen prescriptions within a short time frame, we must be familiar with indications, usual dosages, maximum dosages, off-label uses and contraindications of all medications. Additionally, these factors should also be taken into consideration. Medication safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding Tablet splitting Administration through Ryle's tube Paediatric dosing Availability of extemporaneous formulations Polypharmacy NOTE: Life in the outpatient pharmacy teaches you with what minimum amount of information you will b...
