The traditional, single-lancet device

  • Uses individual, single-use lancets that must be manually loaded and removed.
  • Features an adjustable dial to customize the puncture depth for different skin thicknesses.

Depending on the model of lancing device, the lancet may comes in blood (cylindrical) or flat (as video above) shape. The principle of use remains the same.

The modern, drum-based lancing device is designed for maximum convenience and safety.

  • Does not use individual needles. Instead, it uses a pre-loaded drum containing 6 lancets.
  • The user never sees or handles an exposed needle, making it excellent for patients with needle phobias or poor vision.

Clinical Pearl for Patient Counselling

Always advise patients to wash their hands with warm water before testing.

  • This removes food residue, sweat, and dirt that can cause falsely high or low readings.
  • Additionally, the warm water increases peripheral blood flow, making it much easier to get a sufficient drop of blood.

Tell them to prick the side of the fingertip (closer to the nail edge) rather than the center of the finger pad, as the sides have fewer nerve endings and are significantly less painful.
